Lady Rebels lose season opener to N. Augusta in 57-50 loss

web posted December 3, 2007
JOHNSTON – A 57-50 win for North Augusta at JET Middle School Thursday left the Strom Thurmond High Lady Rebels in search of their first win of the basketball season.
Strom Thurmond had worked for a 15-point lead in the second quarter before North Augusta began their eventual game-winning comeback.

Nicole Mealing and Citayah Burtoncombined on the points to give Strom Thurmond an early 6-2. Strom Thurmond's pressure and missed shots contributed to North Augusta scoring only six points.

Alexsus Houston made a pair of free throws, after a steal, to give the Lady Rebels a 12-6 lead going into the second quarter.

Houston put back an offensive rebound and Amanda Parks converted a three-point play that put the Lady Rebels up 17-8 early in the second quarter.

North Augusta's Jasmine Turner scored on a bank shot in the opening seconds of the quarter, but the Lady Yellow Jackets went four minutes with only a free throw by Brenda Mealing.

Courtney Mealing and Gina Easler keyed a spurt that stretched the Strom Thurmond lead to 24-9 during that time frame.

A three-point play by Mealing kept the 15-point lead for Strom Thurmond, but it would also mark the end of their output on offense with three minutes still left in the first half.

Lindsey Jones and Kayla West combined for eight consecutive North Augusta points. Two baskets came on lay ups after Lady Rebel turnovers. A lay up by Eireka Nickson cut the Strom Thurmond lead to 27-22 at the end of the first half.

Fortunes changed quickly for the Lady Rebels in the third quarter. Baskets by Nickson and Brenda Mealing cut the lead to 27-26 before a 3-pointer from Courtney Mealing temporarily stopped North Augusta's momentum. North Augusta continued its comeback, forcing a tie at 30-30 later in the quarter.

Courtney Mealing picked up three fouls in a matter of seconds, and the Yellow Jackets finally went up 32-30 on a jumper by Jones. Mealing picked up her fourth foul later in the quarter and was relegated to the bench.

The Lady Rebels hit another cold spell from the floor in the third, and North Augusta took a 41-32 lead into the final quarter. Easler scored five of her 11 total points in the
fourth to cut the lead to 45-39, but North Augusta held off the charge. Strom Thurmond cut the lead to 51-48 late in the game, but Jones made six of eight attempts from the line in the final seconds to secure the victory.

Aiken High's 66-32 win last Tuesday marked a disappointing debut for new Strom Thurmond girls' basketball coach Jessica Parker last Tuesday. The Lady Rebels were only down by five at the half (30-25), but a total of seven points worth of offense in the second half turned the game into a runaway win for Aiken.

After hosting South Aiken on Tuesday, the Lady Rebels travel to North Augusta to try and avenge the loss on Dec. 7. Tip-off for the South Aiken game is scheduled for 6 p.m.
