Rebels drop to 1-4 for season

web posted December 10, 2007
NORTH AUGUSTA – The early season struggles of the Strom Thurmond High boys' basketball team continued with a 59-41 loss at North Augusta Friday. North Augusta was a 78-53 winner the first time the teams met.

Both teams had trouble with missed shots and turnovers to start the game. Bryan Narcisse converted a three-point play to put the Yellow Jackets up in the opening seconds. As was the case with the first game, he also blocked two shots early to stop the Rebels inside.

North Augusta went up 5-0 before Justin Smith scored seven consecutive points, in less than a minute, to give the Rebels a lead. Darell Curry converted a turnover into a basket to tie the game, and Ricardo Hodges added a lay up to give the Yellow Jackets back
a 9-7 lead going into the second quarter.

Smith's second putback of an offensive rebound and assist on a Tra'ves Bush lay up gave the Rebels back an 11-9 lead just over a minute into the second quarter. Leroy Gilchrist put back a rebound to help the Rebels hold on to a 13-11 lead, but that would
mark the end of their offense for the final five plus minutes of the half.

Brandon Curry scored three lay ups in the 15-0 run. One was a part of a three-point play. Darell Curry scored two lay ups and Terrence Marion scored another basket on a short baseline jumper.

Strom Thurmond got back into the contest with a 7-0 spurt to open the third quarter. Joe Cook started with a putback and Mike Kemp canned a 3-pointer after an inbound play turned into a lay up for Smith.

Gilchrist's two free throws cut the North Augusta lead to 26-22 with just under six minutes left in the quarter.

North Augusta put a halt to the momentum by outscoring the Rebels 17-6 over the remainder of the quarter. Ronald Sims scored all eight of his points during the
run for the Yellow Jackets.

North Augusta led 43-28 after the third quarter and Strom Thurmond would come no closer than 17 points in the fourth.

Narcisse had 16 and Brandon Curry 14 points to lead the way for North Augusta. Smith and Gilchrist finished with 11 and 10 respectively for Strom Thurmond.

North Augusta remained unbeaten on the season after the win over the Rebels.

The Rebels dropped to 1-4 on the season with a 53-52 home loss to South Aiken last Tuesday. Blake Murphy hit a free throw with just over a second left in the game to give the Thoroughbreds the one point win.

Jamal Davis scored a game-high 14 points to lead three South Aiken players in double figures. Bucky Washington and Donnell Davis had 12 and 11 points respectively.

Andre Brooks with 12 was the only Strom Thurmond player in double figures.

Strom Thurmond traveled to Aiken for a game last night. They travel back that way to face South Aiken on Friday.
