Lady Rebels swat Yellow Jackets in 65-38 win

web posted December 10, 2007
NORTH AUGUSTA – Strom Thurmond's Lady Rebels gave head coach Jessica Parker the first wins of her varsity head coaching career in decisive fashion. Following a rout of South Aiken on Tuesday, Strom Thurmond posted a 65-38 win at North Augusta on
Friday.

Friday's win marked a major turnaround from the first game where North Augusta won by a score of 57-50. North Augusta took an 8-6 lead when Eireka Nickson converted a steal into a lay up near the midway mark of the first quarter, but that would turn out to be
their last lead of the game.

Strom Thurmond closed the quarter on a 16-3 run with contributions coming from several players. Gina Easler put back one of her many offensive rebounds and
Alexsus Houston made one of two free throws after a baseline drive. Houston also made a nice pass that led to a basket for Citayah Burton.

Danielle Holmes converted a steal into a basket and Courtney Mealing finished the run with seven consecutive points. The last came on a long 3-pointer at the horn.

The second quarter was more of the same. North Augusta opened with a basket to cut the lead to 22-11, but the Lady Rebels came right back and pushed the margin back
to 27-13 after Holmes made a free throw following a North Augusta turnover. Strom Thurmond kept momentum and ended the first half up 41-19. North Augusta
finished the half with just one more point than Mealing's individual total.

North Augusta tried several defenses on Mealing, but none of them worked. She frequently beat people off the dribble or found teammates for open shots. Mealing
led all players with 26 points scored. Alexsus Houston and Gina Easler finished with 13 and 11 respectively. Strom Thurmond continued to pad the lead in the third quarter. It reached 30 points, at 56-26 with just under two minutes left. The lead topped 31 points
twice in the fourth quarter, and North Augusta would come no closer than the final 27-point margin. The Lady Rebels gave coach Jessica Parker the first head coaching win with a 68-39 pounding of South Aiken at JET Middle School last Tuesday.

Strom Thurmond was only up 29-24 at the end of the first half, but their third quarter output alone surpassed what the Lady Thoroughbreds did for the entire second half.

In that decisive third quarter, Strom Thurmond went for 20 points while holding South Aiken to just eight. A 19-7 scoring edge in the fourth quarter led to the 29-point margin of victory.

Strom Thurmond's Courtney Mealing had a game-high 28 points. Teammates Alexsus Houston and Danielle Holmes finished with 11 and nine respectively. Jade Priester
had 16 points, with a trip of 3-pointers, and Whitney Dyches had 12 with a pair of 3-pointers, to lead South Aiken. The Lady Thoroughbreds dropped to 2-2 on the
season with the loss.
