Wardlaw sweeps pair of wins from Fox Creek
web
posted December 17, 2007
JOHNSTON – The Wardlaw Academy basketball
teams swept a pair of home games from Fox Creek High School last
Wednesday. The Lady Patriots won by a 54-23 score while the varsity
boys held off a late rally to defeat the Predators 42-36.
The Lady Patriots missed open shots in the first quarter, but Fox Creek
could not connect as well. The Lady Predators were deliberate in their
style of play, but Wardlaw would eventually score a series of lay ups
after Fox Creek was slow to get back on defense. Wardlaw held a 9-3
lead at the end of the first quarter. Erica Just scored the Fox Creek
points on a free throw at the mid-way point of the quarter and field
goal in the closing seconds.
Just scored eight of the team's ten second quarter points, but they
would come no closer. Elizabeth Stone scored eight of her game-high 27
points in the quarter
as Wardlaw went into the halftime locker room up 23-10.
Wardlaw's Briggs Belcher made a free throw to open the third quarter,
but the next seven Lady Patriot baskets came on lay ups from just being
quicker up the court.
Wardlaw's lead stood at 40-15 after three quarters and it would
continue to grow. Six consecutive lay ups stretched the margin to 50-15
with just under six minutes left in the game. The 31-point final
deficit came when Erica Just scored a lay up in the closing seconds.
Wardlaw's guys forced the Predators to play catch up from the start of
the game. Both teams applied heavy pressure on defense, but Wardlaw was
able to convert on opportunities while Fox Creek could not do the same.
The only first quarter points for the Predators came when Owen Jacobs
put back an offensive rebound with just under four minutes gone in the
game. The Patriots committed three turnovers to start the
game. Stephen Balentine went for the first three Wardlaw points, around
the Jacobs putback. The Patriots closed on a 7-0 spurt to go into the
second quarter with a 10-2 lead.
E. J. Bijur's 3-pointer and three-point play cut the Wardlaw lead to
14-8 two minutes into the second quarter. Fox Creek would cut the lead
to six points again later, but a 3-pointer by Balentine gave the
Patriots back a 23-14 lead at the end of the first half.
Wardlaw had turnover problems in the third quarter, and a 31-18 lead
was cut to 31-26 in the final two minutes of the quarter. Fox Creek
made a final push that cut the lead to 40-34 in the final seconds, but
Balentine hit a pair of free throws to secure the
victory.
Both Patriot teams ended the week in a tournament at Laurens Academy.
