Rebels topple Hornets
web
posted December 17, 2007
JOHNSTON – Strom Thurmond avenged a
one-point loss the first time the teams met by taking an 80-70 overtime
victory at South Aiken on Friday. The Thoroughbreds overcame a
nine-point fourth quarter deficit to send the game into the overtime
period.
Strom Thurmond had three consecutive 15-point quarters to help take a
45-36 advantage into the fourth. The duo of Leroy Gilchrist and Joe
Cook was effective
inside while Justin Smith scored from the perimeter and on drives to
the basket. Gilchrist and Smith would lead Strom Thurmond with 24
and 20 points respectively while Cook finished with 13.
South Aiken surpassed the output from the previous two quarters with a
27-point fourth quarter to tie the game. Bucky Washington scored 24 and
Jamal Davis 17 to lead South Aiken on Friday. In South Aiken's 53-52
win in the first game, Davis led the Thoroughbreds with 14 while
Washington was held to 12 points.
Expending all the energy to tie the game in the fourth left South Aiken
with little for the overtime. Strom Thurmond had a 17-7 scoring edge in
the extra session. The Rebels improved to 3-4 on the season with the
win over South Aiken.
The Rebels began last week with a 62-60 loss at Aiken on Tuesday.
In yet another heartbreaker, Aiken drove for the game-winning basket
with less than 10 seconds left on the game clock.
The Friday game was a reversal of their first meeting. The Hornets were
up by 10 points in the first quarter of that game before Strom Thurmond
turned things in their favor on the way to a 69-57 victory.
Leroy Gilchrist was out with an injury the first game, but dominated
Aiken inside with a 27-point night on Friday. The smaller Hornets had
their moments inside, however, and went out of the first half with a
35-33 halftime lead.
A scoring run in the third helped Aiken open a nine-point lead, but
Strom Thurmond was able to cut the margin down to six going into the
fourth quarter. Gilchrist put back an offensive rebound that tied the
game at 54-54 at the mid-point of the fourth quarter.
Strom Thurmond missed a chance to go ahead in the final minute and had
to foul Aiken to try and stop the clock.
Aiken missed the back end of a free throw opportunity and Strom
Thurmond drove in for a basket that tied the game at 60-60 with seconds
left. The Hornets held the
ball for the final shot and hit the game-winner. Marcel Harvey had 15
and Camron Taylor 14 to lead three Aiken players in double figures.
Justin Smith added 15 points in a losing cause for Strom Thurmond.
Strom Thurmond is back on the floor Dec. 19 when they play in the
Holiday Classic in Savannah, Ga. That tournament runs through Saturday.
Following the Holiday Classic, the team will not return to play until
opening the region schedule with a home game
against Chapin on Jan. 4.
Strom Thurmond High's Lady Rebels continued their superiority over
South Aiken with a 58-46 win on the road Friday.
