Rebel victories hard to come by in Tournament Play
web
posted December 24, 2007
JOHNSTON – Victories were hard to come by
for the Strom Thurmond High boys and girls basketball teams in holiday
tournaments this week. The Lady Rebels picked up one win after two
games in the Thoroughbred Classic tournament at South Aiken.
They lost 59-53 against Barnwell in the first round before coming back
to rout Allendale-Fairfax 81-30 in the second round. A scoring edge of
18-5 in the third quarter was the difference in Barnwell's win. The
Lady Rebels tried to rally in the fourth quarter, but could not
completely make up the deficit.
Strom Thurmond's junior guard Courtney Mealing led all players by
scoring 38 points. No other Lady Rebel would finish in double figures.
Mealing would almost equal the total in the next contest.
The Lady War Horses had one player finish with 13 and another 11 points
in the win.
Strom Thurmond improved their record to 4-5 on the season with the big
win over the Lady Tigers. Strom Thurmond had such control of the game
early on that they almost surpassed the previous game total with a
50-point first half performance. The Lady Rebels received another
sterling performance from Mealing who finished with 36, but teammate
Alexsus Houston also chipped in a season-high total of 19 points in the
win.
The Strom Thurmond guys traveled to Savannah, Ga., to participate in
the Holiday Classic Tournament. They lost their first game there to the
Beach Bulldogs by a
score of 64-52.
The Rebels had to play catch up as Beach opened the game with a 7-0
run. Beach stretched the lead to nine points later in the quarter and
held off Strom Thurmond's attempts to rally.
The Rebels did cut the lead to four points in the second quarter, but
could not forge ahead. Beach went into halftime with the lead and would
go on to the victory.
Lawrence Brown had 16 points and eight rebounds to lead three Beach
players in double figures. Strom Thurmond's leading scorer was Leroy
Gilchrist with 16 points. Teammate Joe Cook finished with 12 points and
14 rebounds. Gilchrist finished just short of the "double double" with
nine rebounds.
Beach improved to 8-2 with the win. The Rebels fell to 3-5 on the
season with the loss.
Play at both tournaments continued through the weekend. In an early
consolation round game in Savannah on Saturday, Strom Thurmond squared
off with Groves High School. The winner of that game had a final
contest with North Augusta.
The Lady Rebels will be back on the court in another tournament at
Aiken High Dec. 27-29. The varsity boys do not play again until they
host Chapin in the Class 4-AAA region opener on Jan. 4. The girls' game
with Chapin tips off at 6 p.m. that night.
