Lady Rebels end 2007 with win, first game of 2008 Friday
web
posted December 31, 2007
AIKEN – Strom Thurmond's Lady Rebels
downed Estill High 44-30 Thursday for their lone win at the Toyota
Scion of Augusta Holiday Classic at Aiken High. The Lady Gators opened
the game with an early 5-2 lead on the strength of a 3-pointer and a
pair of free throws. The Lady Rebels broke a 5-5 with an 8-0 run that
started with a
3-pointer by Alexsus Houston. Estill did manage to cut into the Strom
Thurmond lead with a pair of baskets in the closing seconds of the
quarter.
Junior guard Courtney Mealing accounted for all of the Strom Thurmond
offense in the second quarter with 14 points. She finished the contest
with 32 and would go on to be named to the All-Tournament team. Estill
managed to tie the game late in the second quarter, but Mealing's
personal 11-2 run stopped them from taking a lead. Mealing finished
with the first half with more points than the entire Estill team.
Both teams had trouble on offense, but Strom Thurmond managed to pad
their lead to 16 points in the third quarter as Estill's struggles
continued.
Continued success gathering offensive rebounds helped Estill cut the
lead to ten points with just under five minutes left in the fourth
quarter. It was that success on the boards that was a concern for Lady
Rebel head coach Jessica Parker.
Strom Thurmond held off Estill while the Lady Gators went over four
minutes without a point. Strom Thurmond improved to 6-6 on the season
with the win.
In their first game at the Classic, Augusta's Glenn Hills shut down
Strom Thurmond to post a 50-21 win. Strom Thurmond had great difficulty
trying to score against Glenn Hills' zone defense in the contest. Glenn
Hills was only up by six points at the end of the first half, but
outscored Strom Thurmond 29-6 in the second.
Glenn Hills' Ciara Lyons scored 17 points to lead all players while
Mealing had 14 to lead the Lady Rebels. The Lady Rebels fell 46-31 to
Richmond Academy (GA) in their final tournament game. Mealing led the
Lady Rebels with 13 points while teammate Alexsus Houston added 10.
Fellow All-Tournament team member Kaylyn Small was the only Lady
Musketeer in double figures with a game-high 21 points.
The Lady Rebels closed out the Thoroughbred Classic with a 51-43 win
over Our Lady of Mercy the previous week.
Our Lady of Mercy fell behind by four points at the end of the first
quarter and could never get back in the game. They cut the lead to
21-19 at the half, but Strom Thurmond went back up 39-32 after three
quarters.
Courtney Mealing led the Lady Rebels with another 30-point game. The
