Rebel wrestlers rank second in region

SPORTS – The Strom Thurmond Wrestling Team will begin their second half of the season next week currently ranked second in the region. Coach Barnhart will be leading the Rebel wrestlers in their next match, a region tri-match with Newberry and Mid Carolina at Mid Carolina, on January 5th.

SPORTS – Strom Thurmond wrapped up the season last week with a heart breaking loss to Central Pageland, but the outstanding coaching, talent and athleticism of this team did not go unnoticed. There were 36 total players selected from the six region schools. Thurmond sent 10 players which left the other five schools to battle for the remaining 26 slots.

Matt Holmes Earns All Super Region II Honors

NEWBERRY – Matt Holmes, former Rebel standout and member of the 2005 State Title team, was named to the 2009 All South Atlantic Conference team for his outstanding play at Newberry College.  Holmes (only a junior) has started 20 consecutive games at center and graded out at 90% for the season.

Turnovers Seal Thurmond’s Fate, Central Wins 14-9

SPORTS – A huge crowd made the long trip to Pageland to watch the Rebel’s third round showdown with the Eagles. But they saw something they hadn’t witnessed all season; an abundance of turnovers. Four turnovers proved to be the difference in the game for Rebels on a night when it seemed they couldn’t get traction from spinning their wheels.

Central ends Rebels hopes with 14-9 defeat

SPORTS – The Strom Thurmond Rebels went down fighting in the third round of the playoffs Friday night against last year’s opponent Pageland Central with a score of 14-9. After trailing 14-3 at the half, the Rebels came alive in the fourth quarter to tack on another 6 points but failed to score on a 2-point conversion. With only minutes to go in the fourth quarter, the Rebels took over after an interception and inspired the Rebels supporters that a win was still within their grasp.

Rematch: Playoffs Round III, Thurmond at Pageland Central

SPORTS – It’s the third round of the South Carolina AA State Playoffs and Strom Thurmond (10-2) will take the road to Pageland to face the Central Eagles (10-2).  It’s approximately a 2 hour 45 minute drive, so leave early to make it on time.  Last season, the town of Pageland shutdown as nearly all of its citizens were in Johnston, packed into Strom Thurmond’s stadium.  Now it’s our time to return the favor by packing out their stadium.

SPORTS – Martinez Gallman took the second half kickoff 85 yards down the right sideline towards the scoreboard, out running everyone on the field, including multiple players that had angles on him, for Strom’s third score of the night. After Northrop split the uprights the Rebels led 21-0 with 11:48 remaining in third and they were well on their way to Pageland SC for round three of the playoffs.

Desmond Davis Player of the Week

SPORTS – Tim Crane has named EdgefieldDaily's Player of the Week as Desmond Davis. The junior wide receiver turned quarterback did an exceptional job while filling in for the injured Raleigh Yeldell. Davis was 7 of 8 attempts for 81 yards passing with no interceptions. He also rushed 16 times for 145 yards with two touchdowns. He topped his night off with a two-point conversion run.

Preview of Round 1 Playoffs - Eau Claire at Thurmond

SPORTS – Eau Claire (1-9, 1-4) grabbed the number four seed in region IV with a victory over Lee Central in region play.  There was a three way tie for the final playoff spot in region IV and the Shamrocks beat out Andrew Jackson and Lee Central by allowing the fewest points in their games among each other.  The Shamrocks are now in the playoffs and on their way to Strom Thurmond (8-2, 5-0) this Friday.

Big Plays Push Thurmond Past Gilbert 21-7

SPORTS – Sophomore talent Raleigh Yeldell didn’t play two full quarters, but that was all the time the starting quarterback needed to lift the Rebels to their seventh straight victory.  Yeldell went down after a 50 yard run at the six minute mark of the second quarter and did not return for the remainder of the game.

Merriwether Mustangs topple JET to break 10-year domination

JOHNSTON – The Merriwether Middle School football team turned the tide on the ten year domination of Edgefield County football by defeating the J.E.T. Middle School team 14 to 6 in a thriller Thursday night. MMS dominated the first half with touchdowns scored by Nate Bright and Kenyatta Dunbar. Michael Almond added the extra points with perfect soccer style kicks to put MMS ahead of JET 14 - 0 at the half.

Lady Rebs Golf Team takes 3rd in State Tournament

SPORTS – The Lady Rebel Golf Team from Strom Thurmond High School finished 3rd  at the 3A State Tournament that was played in Conway at Quail Creek Golf  Course. There is not a 2A State tournament and we are the only 2A team to qualify for this tournament so we call ourselves the” 2A State Champs” We were only 6 shots out of the lead and shot 324 the first day and 314 the final day.

SPORTS – Gilbert (5-4, 1-3) will be looking to finish the season on a good note.  After starting the season 4-1, the Indians have ran into hard times during region play; only producing one win against Saluda.  “We haven’t been effective on offense the last three weeks, but I think we have some things worked out now and should be a lot better this week.” Gilbert head coach Barry Harley said.

SPORTS – The final week of regular season play has arrived in 2A football and as usual, Strom Thurmond has things wrapped up. Strom Thurmond captured their fifth region title in the previous six seasons, last Friday putting the Rebels 28-1 under Lee Sawyer in region play and will look to make it 29-1 this week.  They have earned a #1 seed and will be guaranteed two home playoff games; if they win the first one, of course.

Rebels trounce Tigers 40-0: Looks to Region lll Championship Friday night

SPORTS – “I told my guys at halftime, this game is too close and we cannot continue to let them hang around.” Strom Thurmond head coach Lee Sawyer about Thurmond’s 9-0 halftime lead. The entire team got the message. Demarkus Smith returned the second half kickoff 25 yards to the Saluda 41 yard line. On the first play from scrimmage Raleigh Yeldell took a quarterback keeper around the right end for a touchdown. Sam Northrop kicked the point after and Thurmond led 16-0 with 11:43 remaining in the third. The Rebels never looked back from that point on.

Saluda head coach Doug Painter was offensive coordinator at Strom Thurmond for the three previous seasons. He took the job at Saluda because he was ready to get back on the field as a head coach and is looking to build up the Tiger program.

SPORTS – Last week Thurmond and Mid Carolina were locked in an epic defensive battle, which is the epitome of what Region III football is all about. Newberry handled Saluda with ease (42-17) and Batesburg did the same to Gilbert (38-7).  Region 3 remains the only region in AA football in which three teams have given up fewer than 100 points on the season.

SPORTS – With 1:22 remaining in regulation, Mid Carolina throws a touchdown pass on 4th and 9 from their 11, to double covered Kendrelle Neal, which pulled Mid Carolina within one point. The touchdown drive covered 59 yards, 6:03 minutes of the clock and saw Mid Carolina convert on three fourth down attempts.

SPORTS – Strom Thurmond (3-2) will make their way to Prosperity this Friday night for the first region showdown of the year against Mid Carolina (3-2). The MC Rebels run a double wing t offense and play hard nosed physical football. They have the ability to shutdown offenses and keep defenses on their heels. Last week they racked up over 400 yards of total offense, but couldn’t hold off Chapin as the Eagles made a late comeback.

SPORTS – The real football season has arrived this week; region play.  All teams have a clean slate to work from and what they did thus far (good or bad) doesn’t mean anything.  The top four teams from each region will make the playoffs in AA football.  Forty eight teams will be competing for thirty two playoff spots, starting this Friday night.

Rebels Put a Leash on the Dogs, Win 28-12

SPORTS – The third quarter separated the men from the boys.  Bluff kicker Kyle Mckie booted the kickoff through the endzone to pin ST deep at the 20 with the Rebels trailing 12-7.  The Rebel offense marched 80 yards in 12 plays for the lead changing touchdown, capped off by a one yard touchdown run from Nick Williamson out of the wildcat formation.  Northrop delivered the PAT and the Rebels were up 14-12 with 6:30 remaining in the third quarter.

One was a 51 yard touchdown run and the other was a 30 yard return which set the Rebel offense up at the South Aiken 12 yard line for the game's final score.

SPORTS – The South Aiken Thoroughbreds (0-3) will ride into Johnston looking for their first win this Friday night.  Don’t let their record fool you.  The Tbreds are a good ball team that had the misfortune of facing three very good football teams early in the season; Silver Bluff, North Augusta and Aiken High. Their three opponents are a combined 8-1, with Aiken’s sole loss coming at the hands of Silver Bluff in five overtimes.

Jacket’s Throw Big Plays Over Thurmond with 27-16

SPORTS – Coming into the game Strom Thurmond head coach Lee Sawyer knew his defense couldn’t allow big plays if the Rebels would have a chance.  A task that proved to be easier said than done.  The Jackets found weaknesses in Strom Thurmond’s secondary and went after them, completing 10 passes for 245 yards on just 14 attempts.

EDGEFIELD – The Strom Thurmond Rebels will take their 1-1 record to North Augusta, 2-0, for the CSRA game of the week. This season the Jackets are one of the teams to beat in the CSRA and in 4A South Carolina. Five players from the Jacket’s roster have already received offers to play at the next level. North Augusta has a high scoring offense that has scored at will on the ground and through the air thus far this season.

SPORTS – Gilbert is the only region team that is undefeated so far this year.  No region team has a losing record. Through the first two games, Strom Thurmond leads the region in points scored per game (35) and Gilbert leads in points allowed per game (6.5).  Batesburg-Leesville has scored the least (33) and given up the most (45).  Newberry, Mid Carolina and Thurmond have all posted one shutout thus far.

SPORTS – Strom Thurmond came out of the corner swinging and never let up.  “I’m proud of my team for playing hard and not getting complacent.  It was nice to hold them early, score on our first play and keep the intensity throughout the game," Head Coach Lee Sawyer said. The deciding indicator of the night took place right before the opening kickoff.  The Rebel’s won the coin toss and it was all over from there.

SPORTS – The Strom Thurmond Rebels will look to get into the win column Friday night when the Trojan’s of Ridge Spring-Monetta come to town. Last week the Rebels dropped the season opener at Chapin, after a fourth quarter rally came up just short. 
Ridge Spring-Monetta will begin their season with the trip to Johnston. Head Coach Mark Rodgers says the team is healthy and will have had nine good practice days to prepare for ST, by Friday night. Last season RSM finished 5-6, losing in the first round of the playoffs to Christ Church. The Trojan offense averaged 14.9 ppg and their defense allowed 29.6 ppg, in 2008.

CHAPIN – In a hard fought battle Friday night, the Strom Thurmond Rebels failed to overcome a 21-point rally by Chapin in the third quarter that placed them with a 28-14 lead at the start of the final quarter. It looked as though the Rebels were on their way to rally back when Raleigh Yeldell took a quarterback keeper around the left tackle for a 66 yard touchdown with 7:43 remaining in regulation.  Sam Northrop adds the point after kick to cut the Chapin lead to 28-21.

SPORTS – The days are getting shorter, schools are back in session and the Strom Thurmond Rebels are preparing to travel to Chapin for a battle with the Eagles.  It’s hard to believe, but football season is already upon us. Chapin acquired a new high profile coach in the offseason (Scott Early), when Larry Grady stepped down.  Early led Myrtle Beach to the AAA state title last season and has an overall record of 78-34 as a head coach. This will be Early’s first ever week zero game and hopefully his last, if it is up to him.

SPORTS – Strom Thurmond’s Brent Wilder will be stepping down as head baseball coach of the Rebels and going to Saluda High.  Wilder wanted an opportunity to get back into coaching football as well as remaining in baseball, so he has decided to make the move to Saluda.  Current Athletic Director, Doug Painter, says Wilder will be an assistant baseball coach and an offensive lineman coach at Saluda.

MERRIWETHER – The Fox Creek High School Softball Team has won the Region 4-A title for the third year in a row. The Lady Predators went undefeated in region and clinched the title on Wednesday with their win against Wagener-Salley High School.

She is the school's all-time leading scorer by a wide margin with 2,781 career points, and boasts totals of 668 rebounds, 409 assists and 382 steals for a stellar career average of 20.8 points, 5 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.9 steals per game. But as good as those numbers are, she was even more impressive as a senior.

JOHNSTON – Coach Lee Sawyer put an end to any rumors that he was considering leaving Strom Thurmond to fill the shoes of Greenwood coach Shell Dula who announced in December that he was retiring after 12 years as Greenwood’s head football coach. Coach Sawyer was thought to be the top pick for the job after being a former defensive coordinator under Dula for three years. “I would like to announce that I am not pursuing the Greenwood High School job or any other job that I may be rumored to take,” Sawyer said at a press conference at Strom Thurmond Friday morning.

SPORTS – The Strom Thurmond Rebels proved they are worthy of their undefeated record by dominating the Southside Tigers by a score of 61-27 Saturday night. The play of the game came with 8 minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter with Rebel’s leading 28-13 and the momentum shifting towards Southside. The Southside Tigers forced the Strom Thurmond punt in a scoreless third quarter. After an errant snap, Rebel kicker Ren Fell was forced to chase the ball catching up with it at the Rebel 20 yard line while he was being chased by four, huge and hungry, Southside Tigers.

Rebels Rout Saluda 64-0 to remain undefeated

SPORTS – The liquid sunshine was steady throughout the night, but it wasn’t enough precipitation to drown out the fireworks that Coach Lee Sawyer brought to the show. Saluda received the opening kickoff and it only took two plays for Tra’ves Bush to sniff out an interception from the Tiger offense.  The Rebel offense took the field and moved 38 yards in 7 plays before Javon Brown called his own number from 12 yards out to put Thurmond on the scoreboard, with 8:37 to go in the 1st quarter.  The Rebels missed the point after attempt because of a high snap and wet ball leaving the Rebels a 6-0 lead.

SPORTS – We are past the halfway mark of Region III play and there are many more questions than answers. There are 4 teams tied at 1-2 in region play, with just 2 games remaining.  Two of the four tied, will not make the playoffs. SPORTS – With just two weeks of region play in the books, Region III has shown why it is considered one of the strongest regions in the state of South Carolina. Five of the six teams have already earned a region victory, four of the six teams have a winning record, and the region is still wide open for any team to win. SPORTS – The 3rd quarter separated the men from the boys.  Ren Fell opened the second half with a touchback, the Blue Steel defense held for a three and out, and the Rebel offense marched 51 yards, in seven plays and four minutes, behind a very game offensive line, to pull Strom Thurmond away, 20-6.  The Rebel defense only allowed the Panthers 17 yards, on three possessions, and no points in the 3rd  quarter.  They also forced a high snap on a B-L punt that resulted in the Rebels taking over at the Panther 17 yd line.  That would produce three more points for the Rebel offense.

Bush rushes 34 yards down to the Mid Carolina 22.  Three plays later Maurice Brown would score from three yards out to move Thurmond ahead 14-0 and give them all the momentum needed to pull away.

AIKEN – On a night when the horses couldn’t get out of the gate for South Aiken, their best chance for a score came with 5:24 remaining in the 4th quarter, when a Thoroughbreds defensive player picked up a Rebel fumble and ran it 59 yards to Strom Thurmond’s 26 yard line. That was about the only highlight South Aiken conjured up all night. Although in a hole, the Blue Steel Defense stepped up once again and held for a three and out and their second shutout of the year.

The first quarter proved to be exciting and competitive, with the Patriots and Long Cane trading touchdowns. RIDGE SPRING – The Strom Thurmond Rebels continued to show their dominance on the gridiron Friday night with another resounding victory, this time with a 49-12 win over Ridge Spring Monetta. The Rebel’s Dylan Durham put the game away early in the 2nd quarter with a 42 yard punt return for a touchdown that gave the Rebels a 35-0 lead. Strom Thurmond dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball all night and through the first half of play Ridge Spring had only two first downs, 29 rushing yards and 26 receiving yards.

GREENWOOD - James "Fish" Herrin is a true believer. He knows that no matter the situation, his ballplayers have what it takes to get the job done. Herrin, head coach of the Johnston Dixie Youth Majors All-Star team (Under 12), got yet another lesson in the toughness and perseverance of his troops during District Three play in Greenwood.
Playing in its first game against Clinton, lost 3-1 and found itself in the loser's bracket after just the first game. But the team returned on Sunday and won their game 18-5 against Calhoun Falls.

SPORTS –  The Lady Rebels of Strom Thurmond came up on the short end of a 7-1 softball road decision against Fox Creek Thursday. Both teams had trouble on defense with a combined 12 errors, but the Lady Predators were able to score runs off the Thurmond miscues. Strom Thurmond scored in the top of the first, but Fox Creek came right back with three in the bottom of the inning. Fox Creek added four insurance runs in the bottom of the second inning.

JOHNSTON – The STHS Rebels won the 4th Annual Heritage Classic Tournament on Saturday, February 23rd. The Rebels defeated Silver Bluff High School 4-3 in penalty kicks (PK) that went to sudden death. Derek Vaughn, a sophomore, scored the wining PK. Derek Vaughn described his feelings on taking the sudden death PK as “It was scary.”

Four STH Rebels sign to play college ball

JOHNSTON – Four student athletes signed scholarships to play college football in the Strom Thurmond High School Media Center Wednesday to officially put a wrap on the Rebels' 2007 campaign. A large group of family, friends, print and broadcast media were there to witness the event. The Rebels finished last season with a record of 8-5 losing in the third round of the Class AAA playoffs. The school will drop down to the AA classification this year.

The Lady Patriots downed Aiken Christian 37-24 on Monday before blasting Aiken Prep by a score of 58-8 the next night. Wardlaw improved to 19-0 and 10-0 in SCISA Region 1-A on Friday with a 33-27 home win over Laurens Academy. The varsity boys were 49-40 winners over Aiken Christian, 57-29 victors over Aiken Prep, and edged Laurens Academy 40-38.

Laney Memorial Stadium was preparing for overtime with Strom Thurmond when Cameron Stallings found Courtney Roundtree on an 11-yard touchdown pass and 13-7 win.
