Dining Review

Sportsman's Bar-B-Q
Martintown Road
Merriwether

web posted July 3, 2006

MERRIWETHER – We arrived at 7:55 pm. We were greeted by many of the workers as we found a seat. Within minutes the waitress took our drink order. When she returned with our drinks we then placed our order from the menus at the table. (There is also a big menu hanging in front of the cash register.) The menu offered bar-b-que, chicken (both fried and bar-b-qued), ribs, chicken strips, hash and rice, and many side vegetables. There are also different desserts, as available.

As I sipped my cold Coke, I ordered the loaded baked potato and a side of green beans. My dining partner had ordered sweet tea and then ordered the half-rack of ribs with corn-on-the-cob and potato salad. There were 5 other folks in our dining party, and they all finished ordering their meals, as well. The server left our table, orders in hand at 8:05. At 8:17 the food began to arrive, with my partners rib plate coming first.

His ribs were very tender, with a deep hickory-smoked taste to them. The potato salad was fresh and tasty, and the corn-on-the-cob was hot and buttery. Within a couple of minutes my plate was served. The loaded potato was very large! It was split open and stuffed with tender bar-b-que, a touch of sauce, melted cheese, and sour cream. The side of green beans were hot and seasoned lightly. They made a great combination! The server kept our cups filled, and was on the ball when we had not only one of the styrofoam cups knocked over, but then also had a young boy push his straw through the cup. Both times she was polite and helpful and replaced the drinks at no cost.

At the tables are bottles of bar-b-que sauces to use as you see fit. They have loaves of white bread, and hushpuppies are available upon request. As we all received our dinners, the talking ceased and the eating began. By 8:45 we were all well fed and ready to head home. The server brought our tickets to the table (she had asked how they were to be separated before she took our orders). We paid our bills at the check-out counter, with mine and my dining partners bill coming to $22.53, plus tip.

The building is made of wood to look like a rustic cabin and is nicely maintained. The kitchen can be seen from the register and was very clean and orderly. There is a large aquarium in the dining area to enjoy as you eat, and there are sports flags hanging from the ceiling. On a certain night each week there is a live band that plays, though they were not there on the night we ate. Overall, it was a pleasurable dining experience that I hope to repeat.
