Kendrick to expand Sportsman’s Corner

Edgefielddaily.com
web posted May 9, 2005

Sportsman’s Corner owner Greg Kendrick has purchased two additional acres behind the present location of Sportsman’s Corner and is set to begin construction of a new modern look for the long time local mainstay.

For at least two generations the well known icon location has not changed from its original location or structure. As Merriwether has grown, Sportsman’s, as it is known locally, was the one ever present constant in a community under seize by growth and change. Now, it has been targeted for being put into the classic “days gone by” landmarks such as the North Augusta Trestle, the Edgefield Trestle on Penn Street, and the Historical Landmark of the old wooden church building of Big Stevens Creeks Baptist Church.

Greg Kendrick stated he plans to build the new store behind the present store. Once it is completed the old store will be demolished and in its place the canopied gas islands would be installed.

Many locals hate to see the old store go but knew it was coming. Most we spoke with talked of how the single island gas pump, which services the entire local community, just wasn’t enough any more. With the addition of state imposed islands around the store, parking and traffic at the store became unbearable.

“It was time,” Kendrick said. “We’ve been planning this for a while.”

Fishermen agree. Todd Warsman of North Augusta said Sportsman’s is his last stop on the way to the lake. They got it all,” he said, “bait, gas, lures, a country setting, and you can even renew your license if you need.”

Most locals we spoke with say they have no problem with the improvements but hope, “Greg (Kendrick) remembers what makes this place so great,” one said referring to the posts in the middle of the store which hold sayings and names of long time patrons inscribed on the posts. “Yeah, it may be junk to some, but to locals, it means a lot to reflect,” she said.

Kendrick said he will add the property to the current plat of presently owned property and ask to expand the zoning to include his expansion. A testy issue since the Edgefield County Council just voted to disallow a zoning change for developer Jay Lacy.

However Kendrick feels secure in knowing his property is already zoned commercial and expanding it should not require the same debate Lacy has had to endure.

That request will still have to follow the same path Lacy’s request followed but is expected to meet much less of a community battle as new commercial development met.
