SCE&G Electric Customers Set New Record for Power Usage

STATE – Record cold temperatures across the state yesterday led SCE&G electric customers to set a new record for power usage in a single day, consuming 101,118 megawatt hours of electricity over the 24-hour period. The previous high mark of 98,785 megawatt hours was set Aug. 10, 2007.

Of course, with increased electric consumption comes the potential for higher bills. SCE&G reminds customers that there are some simple ways to help hold down heating costs during the winter months: set thermostats to 68°F or lower (each degree higher can significantly increase heating costs) open blinds and shades during the day to let sunshine in check air filters monthly and change when dirty caulk around windows, replace old weather stripping around doors to keep cold air out periodically check your ductwork for leaks or tears and repair as necessary.

SCE&G customers can avoid weather-related fluctuations in their electric bills by enrolling in the company’s budget billing program. With budget billing, SCE&G projects a customer’s energy charges for the next 12 months based on their usage history, then spreads that amount into 12 equal payments, which will be their monthly payment. SCE&G also encourages customers with high-bill concerns to call its customer service center at 800-251-7234 and speak with a representative before their payment is due.

“With the recent spell of cold weather and the resulting increase in demand for electricity, we realize we’ll have some customers who will find it a hardship to pay their bills,” said Molly Morris, general manager of customer service for SCE&G.  “We offer a number of programs designed to provide options for customers to pay their bills. Customers who need special assistance can call us or come into one of our business offices and talk with us face-to-face.”

South Carolina Electric & Gas Company is a regulated public utility engaged in the generation, transmission, distribution and sale of electricity to approximately 675,000 customers throughout the state. The company also provides natural gas service to approximately 325,000 customers throughout South Carolina.
