PTC Students Travel to State House for Lottery Assistance
web
posted January 29, 2010
COLUMBIA – A group of students and staff
from Piedmont Technical College joined nearly 300 SC Technical College
System students at the State House Tuesday to show their support for
the Lottery Tuition Assistance (LTA) program. Speakers included Dr.
Barry Russell, System president; Rep. Phil Owens, R-Pickens, chair,
Education and Public Works Committee; and Zack Pitts, an LTA recipient
and student at Spartanburg Community College.
More than 300 LTA recipients from the System’s 16 technical colleges
marched to the State House, wearing shirts proclaiming “Thank you for
LTA.” One-third of all technical college students in South Carolina
receive LTA funds. Nearly 40,000 students statewide receive Lottery
Tuition Assistance, which amounts to about $900 per semester for those
enrolled full time. Over 70 percent of the students attending Piedmont
Tech receive LTA.
“To quote a Charles Dickens novel, this is the best of times and the
worst of time,” said Russell in addressing the crowd of students.
“While we are struggling with high unemployment in the state, the
technical college system has seen record growth. That means we are
giving more South Carolinians hope and preparing them for a better
future. And that would not be possible without the LTA funds.”
“I see all of these LTA shirts and I see Life Time Achievement,” said
Owens. “Education is a driving force in the continuing improvement of
our economic outlook in South Carolina. The educational offerings made
by the technical colleges parallel the needs of the jobs we anticipate
coming available in the coming years.”
Piedmont Tech students were excited by the positive response from the
legislators.
“Lottery Tuition Assistance provides the opportunity for those not
fortunate enough to have the funds for their education,” said Babette
Bollini, a human services student at PTC from McCormick.
“To see all of the students coming together from 16 technical
colleges was a sight to behold,” said Laura Killian, business student
from Greenwood. “This was one way of letting our elected officials know
how much we appreciate all that they do for the students who receive
LTA.”
The Lottery Tuition Assistance program was created by the General
Assembly in 2002 for public two-year institutions. Unlike merit-based
lottery-funded aid, award amounts are not guaranteed from semester to
semester, and fluctuate based on lottery collections and student
demand.
