Governor, Commerce to host 23rd annual Rural Summit in Aiken this March
web posted February 4, 2013
COLUMBIA – Governor Nikki Haley and the
South Carolina Department of Commerce will host rural and economic
development leaders from across South Carolina next month for the 23rd
annual South Carolina Rural Summit, presenting a program that will
challenge attendees to improve local communities. The Summit will be
held at the Municipal Center, located at 214 Park Avenue SE, in Aiken
on Monday, March 4, beginning at 8:30 a.m.
“Rural communities across our state play an important role in South
Carolina’s economic success. The Rural Summit provides a chance for
local leaders to come together and share ideas about how to make their
communities more competitive in attracting investment,” said Gov. Nikki
Haley.
Rural community leaders, economic developers and state officials will
share ideas, experiences and practical knowledge to improve rural South
Carolina. Governor Haley will give the keynote address and preside over
the Rural Summit awards ceremony. Each award recognizes an individual
or group that has contributed to the improvement of rural South
Carolina. The winning photograph for the Amateur Rural Summit
Photography Contest will also be selected during the program.
“Economic development in South Carolina is a team sport. This is
especially true in rural communities. But it also requires leadership,
especially from the local level,” said Secretary of Commerce Bobby
Hitt. “The Summit is a great way for our rural partners build
relationships and connect with one another.”
Other speakers at this year’s Summit will include Joe Max Higgins, CEO
of Columbus-Lowndes Development Link, Tan Kirby Davis, president of The
Kirby Resource Group and Bernell K. Ingram, president and CEO of
Visions International.
Registration for the Rural Summit is now open. The registration fee for
the event is $125 before Feb. 20, and $150 from Feb. 20 to Feb. 27. For
