Rep. Don Smith not seeking re-election; Bill Hixon jumps in

web posted February 17, 2010
NORTH AUGUSTA – Ten year veteran State District 83 Representative Don Smith (R) has announced he will not be seeking another term. That has lead North Augusta businessman Bill Hixon to make it known he intends to enter the race to replace Smith. At this time no others have made their intentions known and filing for the election will not take place until next month.

Mr. Hixon, an insurance agent, has stated he will run as a Republican.

Mr. Hixon unsuccessfully challenged Sen. Shane Massey in the 2007 Republican primary for the Senate seat left open after long-time Sen. Tommy Moore resigned. Massey went on to defeat Rep. Bill Clyburn, the Democrat candidate in a close special election that November. Sen. Massey won the seat again in the 2008 election for a full term.

District 83 encompasses North Augusta and Belvedere in Aiken County and a portion of Merriwether and the lower Highway 25 corridor in Edgefield County.

Filing for the seat will open on March 16 and run through March 30.
