Governor Sanford Issues Statement on Death of William F. Buckley
web
posted February 28, 2008
COLUMBIA – February 27, 2008 -Governor
Mark Sanford issued the following statement Wednesday on the death of
William F. Buckley.
"With the death of William F. Buckley, our nation has lost a brilliant
writer and intellect, a patriot, and a good man. When Bill started the
National Review in 1955, the conservative movement was seen by many as
little more than a fad. Bill used his talent for words to wage a
lifelong battle to advance conservative ideas that have proven
themselves to make a difference in people's lives and societies at
large," Gov. Sanford said.
"The persistence of Bill and others like him ultimately led to the
election of Ronald Reagan, and to making the conservative movement what
it is today -- and for that our nation owes him a profound debt of
gratitude. Jefferson and the founding fathers indeed founded this
nation on the notion of limited government, and said at that time that
eternal vigilance was the price of liberty. In the modern era of the
conservative movement Bill was a leader among those who carried
liberty's torch forward - and for this reason I'd ask for others in
South Carolina to join me, Jenny and our four boys in offering the
Buckley family our thoughts and prayers."
