Teacher-Student Sex and 10th Amendment Bills Moving Fast Through
State Senate
web
posted March 11, 2009
COLUMBIA – Two important bills are
continuing their fast journey through the State Senate. The
teacher-student sex ban and 10th Amendment resolution both cleared a
key hurdle Tuesday when they passed out of the Senate Judiciary
Committee
chaired by President Pro Tempore Glenn McConnell.
Teacher-Student Sex Bill: South Carolina teachers or school employees
in supervisory roles could face a felony offense and be sent to prison
for up to five years for having sex with a student. Currently the age
of consent is 16. Those who have sex with a student 16 or 17 would face
up to five years in prison. Those who have sex with an 18-year-old
student would face a $500 fine and 30 days in jail. Senator Greg Ryberg
is the primary sponsor.
10th Amendment Bill: While Congress continues its irresponsible
spending spree and grows our debts on the backs of hardworking South
Carolina taxpayers, many Senate Republicans are pushing a resolution to
reaffirm our state’s sovereignty under the United States constitution.
This bill by Senator Lee Bright (R-Spartanburg) affirms South
Carolina’s sovereignty under the 10th Amendment over all powers not
enumerated and granted to the federal government by the Constitution.
Both bills now head to the full Senate for consideration.
EdgefieldDaily.com will continue to follow these bills as part of our
Legislative Watch.
