Former State Republican Party Chairman Dan Ross passes away

web posted April 17, 2008
COLUMBIA – Former South Carolina Republican Party Chairman Dan Ross of Blackville passed away on Tuesday, April 15, 2008, after suffering a stroke.  Ross served as Chairman from 1976 to 1980 and was instrumental in ushering in a competitive two-party political system in South Carolina after years of Democrat dominance.  South Carolina Republican leaders are remembering Chairman Ross for his dedication and leadership.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of former South Carolina Republican Party Chairman Dan Ross, but we are extremely grateful for his years of service,” said South Carolina Republican Party Chairman Katon Dawson.  “Chairman Ross was a Republican pioneer who joined Governor James B. Edwards, Senator Strom Thurmond and others in laying the conservative foundation in South Carolina on which the Republican Party has been built.  Thanks to Chairman Ross, our State Party is stronger and more united than ever.”

Chairman Ross was active in Republican politics for many years.  He managed Dr. James B. Edwards’ successful campaign for governor in 1974.  Edwards was the first Republican to be elected Governor of South Carolina since Reconstruction.

“First, I want to extend my deepest sympathies to Dan’s family and many friends around the state,” said Governor Edwards.  “Dan was a born leader.  He played a critical role in creating two-party politics not just in South Carolina but across the south.  A man of great principle and character, Dan believed strongly in America and served his country.  I am indebted to him for what he did in his lifetime for me personally and for the Republican Party.  Dan was on the right side of every good cause I have known.  This is a great loss for our State.”

As Chairman, Ross played a major role in presidential politics by working with Republicans to make South Carolina’s Republican Presidential Preference Primary a reality.  The South Carolina Republican Party’s First-in-the-South Presidential Primary has grown in significance over time.  Since 1980, no candidate has won the Republican nomination for president without winning South Carolina’s Republican primary.

U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham said, “Dan Ross was a pioneer in the conservative movement who helped build the modern day Republican Party in South Carolina.  During his tenure as Chairman of the South Carolina Republican Party, he orchestrated the original First-in-the South presidential primary that helped put our party on the map.  Dan was instrumental in transforming South Carolina into a two-party state.  His vision and leadership will be missed.”

U.S. Senator Jim DeMint added, “Dan Ross was instrumental in helping to build a winning Republican coalition in South Carolina.  He was widely respected as a pioneer in Palmetto State politics and will be missed.”

Ross is survived by his wife Helen and daughter Dawn Hollingsworth.
