SC Gov says he will endorse the Presidential candidate that can best his time in Family Fitness Challenge

web posted April 28, 2007
COLUMBIA – Gov. Mark Sanford today offered a lighthearted wager to all 2008 presidential candidates - if they can beat his time in the governor's upcoming 70-mile Family Fitness Challenge bike ride, a presidential endorsement will be theirs.

Governor Sanford has previously invited all Republican and Democratic presidential candidates, their spouses and their families to his and First Lady Jenny Sanford's May 5th bike ride and a 5k run/walk as part of their 2007 Family Fitness Challenge. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney is sending sons Josh and Craig to ride with the governor, while Craig's wife Mary will be walking with the First Lady.

"Mitt may have a leg up with the surrogates he's sending, but hopefully I'll have a good ride and experience will be able to trump youth," Gov. Sanford said. "All kidding aside, this isn't a race, because it's not about the importance of going fast or slow, or finishing first or last. It's about the ideas of fitness and healthy living, which are issues that cross party lines. The bottom line is that when you look at the numbers, as a nation and a state, far too many of us don't eat the right things and don't get enough exercise. I'd invite every South Carolinian to join Jenny, the boys and me to take this step together in changing that trend and moving forward as a healthier state."

The Family Fitness Challenge is an initiative aimed at improving the health of South Carolinians through encouraging healthier decisions in their day-to-day lives. This year's events will take place on Saturday, May 5, with the bike ride and 5k run/walk beginning in Aiken at the Odell Weeks Activity Center at 9:00 a.m.

Logistical details of the Family Fitness Challenge - including start points, end points and rest stops - are posted on Gov. Sanford's website, www.scgovernor.com. The Family Fitness Challenge is part of a larger initiative, the Healthy SC Challenge, a results-oriented initiative aimed at motivating South Carolinians to start making choices to improve health and well-being.

Stay tuned for additional details from the Governor's Office regarding the Family Fitness Challenge. For additional information please call 803-734-2100, or e-mail familyfitness@gov.sc.gov.
