Congressional Candidate Duncan signs Contract From America
web
posted May 3, 2010
STATE – Republican 3rd Congressional
District candidate Jeff Duncan signed the Contract from America on
Thursday, aimed at promoting individual liberties, economic freedom and
constitutionally limited government in Washington. He joins U.S. Sen.
Jim DeMint of South Carolina, who last week became the first to sign.
“Like the Contract With America in 1994, I believe this new Contract
From America will regain for us in 2010 the liberties that have been
taken from us in recent years” Duncan said after signing the contract.
The contract's founding partners include the Tea Party Patriots,
National Taxpayers Union, Freedom Works, Americans for Tax Reform, Let
Freedom Ring and Fair Tax. There are another 150 coalition partners,
many of them local Tea Party groups.
Duncan is a four-term state House of Representatives member and a
Laurens businessman. His campaign, based on consistent conservatism,
has been endorsed by the fiscally conservative Club for Growth. Duncan,
DeMint and 1st Congressional District candidate Tim Scott are the only
South Carolinians among the 11 candidates endorsed this year by the
national organization.
“The contract fits my philosophy like a glove,” Duncan said. “I've been
fighting for lower taxes, less government and more individual freedom
throughout my public career. I believe that given the public mood and
an atmosphere far more ominous than in 1994, this contract has the
opportunity to bring about permanent change in America.”
Among the contract's 10 agenda items are:
1. Limiting the federal
government to its core constitutional duties, defense of the nation
from foreign enemies and the administration of justice in protecting it
from internal subversion.
2.
Return to a free market economy that “preserves and enhances individual
liberty.”
3.
Requiring that every bill considered by Congress cite the
constitutional provision that justifies it.
4.
Rejection of Cap and Trade.
5.
A balanced budget amendment to the Constitution.
6.
Enactment of a single-rate tax system.
7.
Appointment of a commission to audit federal agencies as to their
constitutionality and effectiveness.
8.
Capping federal spending increases by limiting them to the sum of the
inflation rate plus population growth.
9.
An immediate moratorium on congressional earmarks and imposition of a
two-thirds majority vote requirement for passage.
10. Permanent repeal of all tax increases scheduled to begin in 2011.
