South Carolina gets first ever Veteran’s Cemetery

web posted May 17, 2008
ANDERSON – To help ensure that all South Carolina veterans can be buried in a veteran’s cemetery honoring their service, the South Carolina Office of Veterans' Affairs and the United States Department of Veterans Affairs will be dedicating the new South Carolina M.J. "Dolly" Cooper Veterans Cemetery in Anderson on Friday, May 23, at 11:00 am.

This will be the first state owned and operated veterans' cemetery in the history of South Carolina. The cemetery is located at 140 Inway Drive, Anderson, SC, adjacent to the Richard M. Campbell Veterans Nursing Home. The dedication of this cemetery is a culmination of a partnership with the State of South Carolina and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs whereby the federal government provided a grant of $5.1 million to construct and initially equip the cemetery.

Congressman Gresham Barrett and the Under Secretary for the Department of Veterans Affairs for Memorial Affairs, William Tuerk, will assist in the dedication. The public is invited to attend. For additional information, please contact the cemetery staff at (864) 332-8022.
