Sanford to reimburse state for conference trip that touched off affair
web
posted June 26, 2009
COLUMBIA – As a
result of Gov. Mark
Sanford’s confession of infidelity on Wednesday, he released a
statement saying he was going to refund the money for the official trip
that ultimately lead to his first intimate meeting with his Argentine
lover, 42-year-old Maria Belen Chapur (Above)
“While the purpose of this trip
was an entirely professional and appropriate business development trip,
I made a mistake while I was there in meeting with the woman who I was
unfaithful to my wife with. That has raised some very legitimate
concerns and questions, and as such I am going to reimburse the state
for the full cost of the Argentina leg of this trip," Gov. Sanford
said.
The fall-out from Sanford’s confession of infidelity is still lingering
in political circles, some calling for his resignation and others
admitting disappointment yet standing behind him on his political
agenda for the state.
Two press conferences have been called for today, the first is a
Cabinet Meeting with the Governor at 12:30 pm and a second by Sen. Jake
Knotts at 1 pm. Both are to be held at the Statehouse complex.
