Sen. Massey weighs in on Sanford: “The time has come for him to step down”

web posted July 3, 2009
EDGEFIELD – State Senator Shane Massey (R-Edgefield) has broken his silence on Governor Mark Sanford’s revelation of an affair telling EdgefieldDaily.com, “The time has come for him to step down.” Sen. Massey said he remained silent on the issue until he had an opportunity to speak directly with Gov. Sanford, which he did on Wednesday. “We had a good talk,” Massey said.

After the discussion with Gov. Sanford, “I told him what I was hearing from a lot of the 90,000 or so people I represent,” Sen. Massey said, “and it is time, he needs to resign.”

Another aspect of the matter was the possibility that steps might be proposed to remove Gov. Sanford from Office if he does not resign Sen. Massey said. There is a chance that some of Gov. Sanford’s most fervent foes in the Legislature could seek to hold Impeachment proceedings.

An investigation by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) found that Gov. Sanford had not broken any laws in his travels to meet with his self-described “soul-mate” in and out of the continental United Sates. SLED chief Reggie Lloyd said in a press conference on Thursday, ““We’ve come away with absolutely no evidence of suggestion that any public funds were used in an importer manner.”

A Department of Commerce trip to Argentina where Gov. Sanford began his intimate relationship has been reimbursed to the state by Gov. Sanford. “What he did on his own private time, does not change that, doesn’t make it illegal and doesn’t require him to pay back anything, he did so for his own reasons,” Chief Lloyd said.

Gov. Sanford released personal and public records of all of his travels relating to the affair on Thursday. The personal records, though heavily redacted, show the personal expenditures for trips to meet his mistress.

US Sen. Jim DeMint also offered a release on Wednesday in which he expressed his desire to see Gov. Sanford, “Do the right thing,” but never directly said resigning was the “right thing” to do.
