Bauer calls on Gov. Sanford to resign, McMaster enters race

web posted August 27, 2009
COLUMBIA – Lt. Governor Andre Bauer held a press conference Wednesday where he publicly called for Gov. Mark Sanford to resign. Under increasing pressure from Democrats and some Republicans across the state, Gov. Sanford released a letter to Lt. Gov. Bauer stating he would not step down, “I will most humbly decline your offer, but thank you for it nonetheless.”

Bauer, who is in the running for the Governor’s Office in 2010, said if Sanford was to step down he would not run in the election to retain the governorship. A stumbling block for many legislators who do not want Bauer to have incumbent status in the election next year. “I don’t have any interests, and I’m not looking at any other political seats, I am looking at the fact that something needs to happen immediately.”

Bauer said if Gov. Sanford did not resign his campaign to be elected as governor would continue in earnest. If Sanford was to step down, Bauer said he would, “do nothing for the next year except be the best governor this state has ever seen and try to pick off - pick up,” where former Governors Campbell and Beasley left making South Carolina number one in job creation.

Gov. Mark Sanford wasted no time before releasing a reply to Lt. Gov. Bauer’s letter and press conference by releasing a letter at 4 pm stating he would not be “railroaded” out of office by “political opponents”.

Gov. Sanford stated he has released more information about his personal indiscretions, even to the point of it being more than the “public wanted to know” but said he was taking responsibility for his personal actions and that it does not interfere with his ability to govern.

South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster announced he has entered the race for governor on Tuesday but did not call for the resignation of Gov. Mark Sanford. McMaster said there has been too much political gridlock due to ineffective personnel put in place to lead economic development and other areas in the state. McMaster said he felt there’s been “too much dishonesty and too many scandals in public life.”

There are still those in the Legislature who still speak of impeachment, but sources at the Capitol state there is not enough support in the way of voted to force the issue to the floor for a vote.
