Gov. Sanford announces statewide victim notification system

web posted August 30, 2007
COLUMBIA – Governor Mark Sanford and S.C. Department of Corrections Director Jon Ozmint announced Wednesday morning an expanded victim notification system in South Carolina. The expanded notification system will provide online notification and information as well as a 24-hour toll free number victims can call to find out the status of an offender.

The announcement was made at the S.C. Department of Correction’s headquarters on Broad River Road in Columbia. The new system will make it easier to track the offenders incarceration, court dates, hearings, and release information.

The new system is made possible by a $1.25 million federal grant. The state is also pitching in matching funds to implement the program.

Victims will also receive an automated phone call relating the inmate’s transfers from one facility to another in addition to notification of their release. It was not clear if the new program will be linked to the Case Management computer upgrades currently underway in the statewide court system.

In Edgefield County the Sheriff’s Office notifies victims of the release of offenders either by the Sheriff’s Victim’s Advocate or by a deputy.
