Governor Sanford Issues Statement on Students' Deaths

web posted October 30, 2007
COLUMBIA – Governor Mark Sanford issued the following statement on Monday following the fire in North Carolina that claimed the lives of seven South Carolina college students in Ocean Isle Beach, six of which were from the University of South Carolina, the other from Clemson.

"The deaths of these students are an incredible loss, made all the more tragic by the fact that they died at such a young age when they had their entire lives ahead of them," Gov. Sanford said. "Their families, as well as their extended families at USC and Clemson, will be in Jenny, the four boys, and my thoughts and prayers in the coming weeks and months as they make their way through the difficult times ahead. I'd ask that every South Carolinian keep them in their thoughts and prayers as well, and to pray for the speedy recovery of those injured in the fire."

According to Ocean Isle Beach Mayor Debbie Smith, investigators believe the fire started on a deck on the home and quickly spread. Others in the home were able to escape the fire with no or only minor injuries. "They may not be able to determine what started it," Smith told the Associated Press.

Officials said the students were members of the Delta Delta Delta sorority and the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. The names of those killed in the fire have not been released at this writing.
