![]() U.S. Department of Commerce Invests an additional $106,000 in the Third Congressional District of South Carolina web posted November 23, 2006 Washington, DC - The U.S. Commerce Department's Economic Development Administration (EDA) today announced $477,000 in investments to the State of South Carolina, of which the Third Congressional District will receive $106,000 to boost economic development planning efforts. "I appreciate the Bush Administration's efforts to help communities look for ways to diversify the local economy," said Barrett. "In the past month alone the Administration has invested nearly $400,000 toward economic development in my district. These investments will help communities clearly identify the vast resources and knowledge available throughout the Third District and move the region toward new innovation and job creation." The investments announced today include: * $53,000 to the Upper Savannah Council of Governments of Greenwood to continue a comprehensive economic development planning program. * $53,000 to the Lower Savannah Council of Governments of Aiken to continue a comprehensive economic development planning program. This announcement comes on the heels of the EDA investment announced just last month. During a tour of the district in October, Deputy Secretary Sampson and Rep. Barrett announced a $280,000 investment to the Economic Development Partnership of Aiken and Edgefield Counties, Inc. and the South Carolina Department of Commerce. This investment will help develop a textile recovery and diversification strategy for ten South Carolina counties in the Savannah River Basin region. At the time Deputy Secretary Sampson made the following comments, "President Bush believes one way to create jobs is to grow the economy by encouraging investments in local communities. This EDA investment will support the region's efforts to overcome the impact of textile related job losses and will provide a resource to promote economic development opportunities for local citizens." Those words were echoed today by U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development Sandy K. Baruah in a statement released by the Department. EDA serves as a venture capital resource to meet the economic development needs of distressed communities throughout the United States. EDA's mission is to lead the federal economic development agenda by promoting innovation and competitiveness, preparing American regions for growth and success in the worldwide economy.
