Governor's Mansion Christmas Open House Scheduled For December 9

web posted December 7, 2013

COLUMBIA Ė Governor Nikki Haley and the First Family invite South Carolinians to join them for a Christmas Open House on Monday, December 9, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM at the Governor's Mansion. The event is free of charge, open to the public and no reservations are required.

The First Family asks that open house guests consider bringing canned goods for Harvest Hope Food Bank as well as school supplies for the Original Six Foundation to donate to public school students. Canned goods and school supply donations will be accepted at the entrance to the Governorís Mansion.

The Columbia Garden Club, which has decorated the Governorís Mansion for Christmas every year since 1981, began decorating on Monday, December 2, when the Governorís Mansion received five live Christmas trees from the South Carolina Christmas Tree Growers Association and poinsettias grown by Future Farmers of America from Lexington Technology Center.

The Haley children, Rena and Nalin, will help decorate the tree displayed in the Charleston Garden. Governorís Mansion Executive Chef Steven Jankowski will build a gingerbread house modeled after the First Familyís residence, and wreaths within the Mansion Complex will be made and hung by the Horticulture Division of the South Carolina Department of Corrections. Carillon Carolers of Columbia, S.C. will be performing for guests along with saxophone player Dante Lewis.

This yearís open house will also include tours of the Lace House, which will be decorated by the Iris Garden Club with gingerbread houses made by the Lake Murray Elementary School Special Education classes. Story Teller Michelle Langdon will be performing on the first floor of the Lace House and Pianist Susan Buckley-Cumbie will be playing Christmas Music.

Regular guided Christmas tours will also be available December 10-12 and 17-19 at 10:00 AM, 10:30 AM and 11:00 AM.  They are also free of charge, but are by reservation only.  Anyone interested in scheduling a tour should call Nancy Bunch at (803) 737-1710.
