Haley Taps Rep. Tim Scott as Sen. DeMint's Replacement
web posted December 18, 2012
COLUMBIA – South Carolina Gov.
Nikki Haley
announced Monday that she will appoint Rep. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) to the
Senate to fill the seat Sen. Jim DeMint will resign from in January to
head up the conservative Heritage Foundation. “It is with great
pleasure that I am announcing our next U.S. senator to be Congressman
Tim Scott,” Haley said. “I am strongly convinced that the entire state
understands that this is the right U.S. senator for our state and our
country.”
“It is important to me, as a minority female, that Congressman Scott
earned this seat,” Haley said. “He earned this seat for the person that
he is. He earned this seat with the results he has shown.”
Rep. Scott, 47, will become the only African-American currently serving
in the Senate and the first black Republican to serve in the upper
chamber since the 1970's. He will also be the first black senator from
the South since Reconstruction.
“I am thankful for a strong mom that understood that love sometimes
comes at the end of a switch,” Scott said during his opening remarks
following the announcement. "And she loved me a lot."
Rep. Scott was elected to the House in 2010 and was just recently
re-elected to a second term. He is a TEA Party favorite and was said to
be the leading choice of Sen. DeMint. He served on the Charleston
County Council before being elected to the State House of
Representatives and then Congress in 2010.
Sen. DeMint said during his remarks, “I can walk away from the Senate
with confidence knowing that someone is replacing me who is better than
I am. I can tell you, Tim, you’ve inspired me from the moment I saw you
speak in public.” Rep. Scott was visibly humbled by the remarks.
Gov. Haley said, “What we looked for in a new senator is a fighter –
someone with courage and leadership for our state and nation at a time
when we need it most, and someone who understands South Carolina's
issues and knows her people. That's what we found in Tim Scott. It's a
great honor for me to appoint Tim as our next U.S. Senator.”
“I am deeply honored to accept Governor Nikki Haley's appointment as
United States Senator,” said U.S. Rep. Scott. “As much as there is
honor in such an occasion, I am even more humbled at the confidence she
has shown in me, and at the task that is now before me. Representing
the entire state of South Carolina and all of its citizens is a sacred
duty. I look to the Lord's grace to give me the strength and wisdom to
fulfill that duty in a way that reflects well on our state and our
country.”
Rep. Jeff Duncan issued the following statement after being unable to
attend the press conference. “I’m proud of my friend Tim Scott for
being appointed to represent South Carolina in the United States
Senate. Anyone who has had the pleasure of knowing Tim knows him as a
man of character and faith who deeply loves his state and country.
While Tim’s leadership will be deeply missed in the House, his bold
vision for America and his willingness to fight is desperately needed
in the Senate.”
“This is a proud moment for both Tim and for South Carolina, and his
arrival in the Senate couldn’t have happened at a more pivotal time.
With Tim’s appointment, South Carolina’s Federal Delegation will
continue to be the most collaborative and team-oriented delegation in
the country. I’m looking forward to working with him to champion the
cause of defending the constitution, and advocating for limited
government, free-markets, and individual liberties.”
