Stands
empty as basketball game turns into melee
web posted January 13, 2006 JOHNSTON – Thursday night saw a basketball game at Strom Thurmond against Brookland-Cayce turn into a melee as students and parents emptied the bench and began to fight on the gym floor. Edgefield County Deputies were called and back-up was requested from the Town of Edgefield Police Department. According to reports the basketball game was in full swing until the Brookland-Cayce side of the court protested that a foul was not called on a Strom Thurmond player. In no time shouts at the referees turned into an all out brawl with participants from both sides of the court. Several deputies and coaches were required to break up the fight. As more Deputy Sheriff’s arrived some participants were still not finished fighting and tempers were still hot. As Edgefield County Sheriff’s Sgt. Donald Morris arrived the fight had subsided, however two men decided to start round two of the slamboree. Eugene Dobbs Jr., 37 of Trenton and Anthony Baxter, 28, of Columbia were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct. They were both still being held in the Edgefield County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing Friday afternoon. Additional warrants are being sought for the arrest of others the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office said Friday afternoon. A second game with Brookland-Cayce is scheduled for Friday night. School Officials reportedly tried to have the game postponed to no avail as Brookland-Cayce officials said they would have additional law enforcement present to prevent a repeat of last night’s extracurricular activities. No injuries were reported. For
