web
posted February 25, 2008
JOHNSTON – Four
Strom Thurmond High School
students have had their art work selected for placement in the 14th
Annual South Carolina Junior Duck Stamp competition. Quantrez Simpkins
placed 2nd and Mary Mickelsen received an honorable mention. Walt
Morgan and Paloma Luna won the conservation message awards. Ms. Beth
Roberson is the Art Instruction at the local high school.
These students attended a mentoring program with artist in Green Pond,
South Carolina at the Donnelley Wildlife Management Area. The program
allowed the students to interact with some of the countries top artists
in a natural setting in the hopes of furthering their appreciation of
wildlife and waterfowl. Biologists were on hand to help observe and
identify any wildlife the students saw. The local high school students
carried along their sketchpads and other art materials to work on
drawings. The day concluded with a cookout.
The local student’s participation in the program allowed them to study
under famous artist and to learn more about special art techniques.
