Strom Thurmond High School Chorus Students Take Top Ratings

JOHNSTON – Twelve
chorus students attended
the South Carolina Music Education Association's Solo and Ensemble
Festival on Saturday, February 23 at Irmo Middle School. The students
were selected from the Gifted and Talented Chorus Class to participate.
The soloists performed Italian Arias accompanied by their instructor,
Steven McKinney. The students prepared for many weeks with group and
individual lessons with Mr. McKinney to master the music as well as the
language.
Ten of the soloists received Superior ratings and two received
Excellent ratings. Superior ratings were received by Tyler McKinney,
Veronica Rodriquez, Francheska Keels, Megan Coleman, Porsha Settles,
Haylie Wheeler, Margaret Hatfield, Heather Biddlecome, Mercedes Smith,
and Sarah Brown. Excellent ratings were received by Victoria Erickson,
and Prestasia Keels.
One senior student was eligible to compete for the scholarship division
by receiving Superior ratings for three consecutive years. Laura
Wintrow performed the Italian Aria, Amarilli, mia bella by Giulio
Caccini and the Aria from "Semele, Where'er You Walk by G. F. Handel.
Miss Wintrow who was voted Most Talented by the high school's senior
class, proved her award by receiving first runner up in the scholarship
division.
