Thurmond High Dominates Second Annual Heritage Classic Soccer Tournament
web posted February 28, 2006 COUNTY – In the rain and cold on Saturday, February 25th, the Boys’ Varsity Soccer team swept the Second Annual Heritage Classic Tournament winning three games in less than 20 hours. The Rebels dominated Williston Elko Friday night 5 – 0 and returned on Saturday morning to hammer Wagner Sally 7 – 0. Saturday afternoon the Rebels were matched up with Silver Bluff, who also entered the last game of the tournament undefeated. After eighty minutes of regulation play the game was tied 1 – 1 and the winner was determined in a shootout. The Thurmond Rebels were evenly matched with the Silver Bluff Bulldogs both during the game and in the shootout. After the first five penalty kicks, the score was tied at two. The rebels earned the victory in the first pair of the sudden death penalty kicks clinching the win 2 - 1. The entire team contributed to the tournament wins with the bench players accounting for a third of the goals scored and 67% of the teams’ eleven assists. “We let the guys know that when they had the opportunity to get in the game we wanted to see an increase in effort and intensity. We did not get that in our scrimmages, but they came through this weekend” stated assistant coach Johnny Armstrong. All-Tournament Team honors for the Rebels went to Brian Bottoms, Allen Cantrell, Jonathan Cantrell, Daniel Legrand , Ben Mims, Cesar Navaro, and Parker Northrop. “I guess selecting just seven guys was the toughest part of the tournament,” contended Coach Arthur Northrop. “Every one of the guys played tough and did what we asked. Doug Carroll led our defense in the back and he set the tone for a lot of different people we put back there with him. I’m proud of them all.” The Rebels continue this week beginning their regular season play hosting Batesburg at the Spring Sports Complex next to JET at 5:00 on Wednesday and traveling to Williston Elko on Thursday.
