Strom Thurmond High School Holds Black History Month Program
web
posted February 28, 2009
JOHNSTON – Strom
Thurmond High School held their 4th Annual Black History Celebration on
Sunday afternoon, February 22 in the school gymnasium. The event
was organized by Ms. Savannah Williams who is the Spanish Instructor at
the high school. Mr. Zach Collier, STHS Student Body President and STHS
Marching Band Drum Major, along with Miss Alexis Wren, STHS APLA
President and Beta Club Member were the MCs for the program.
Mr. Collier spoke on the PowerPoint Presentation titled Our History:
Edgefield County Citizens. Miss Wren introduced the group Creative
Impressions.
The Creative Impressions group, under the direction of Executive
Director Trey McLaughlin, is a group of talented area teenagers ranging
from 13 to 19 years of age. These teenagers are from Richmond, Columbia
and Lincoln Counties in Georgia and Aiken County in South Carolina.
Through Barefoot Productions, Inc., Creative Impressions was originally
organized to perform for one special occasion.
It was evidenced early that the organization had potential far beyond
the scope of its initial purpose. The organization is now in its
twelfth year and is a performance group with very diverse choral
repertoire. They use a variety of art forms in their presentations.
Besides developing the innate creative abilities of the members,
Barefoot Productions aspires to encourage its members to succeed in
life. They are developing tutoring programs for academic subjects and
SAT/ACT preparation and work hard to provide scholarships to their
graduating seniors.
Ms. Denise Jackson, History Instructor at STHS and the founder of the
STHS Black History Celebration gave remarks to guests focused around
“change”.
Ms. Savannah Williams closed the event with a benediction song.
