Beja Receives Appointment to U.S. Naval Academy

web posted March 5, 2007

JOHNSTON – James W. Beja of Johnston, signed his acceptance to attend the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD beginning on June 27, 2007. This appointment carries with it a four year scholarship valued at $300,000.00 and will result in a commission from the President as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy.

To achieve this appointment, James completed a rigorous high school regime of straight A’s, high standardized test scores, high level of physical fitness and filling numerous leadership positions at Strom Thurmond High School. Nominations for this appointment came from South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham and Representative J. Gresham Barrett.

Each year over 15,000 top candidates worldwide compete for 1,200 appointments to USNA. The following are some of the achievements that led to James’ appointment: Life Scout; Commanding officer of his NJROTC Unit; volunteer and mentor for numerous community service programs; President of the school’s National Beta Club for academic excellence; awards of distinction from three service groups; Mock Trial member; church usher; Junior Scholar for six different Universities; received a full NROTC scholarship to The Citadel; and was qualified for the Palmetto Fellow and other scholarships. Finally, James attended numerous events away from the high school environment including: South Carolina National Guard Mini Boot Camp; Rotary Youth Leadership Conference; Business Week Conference; U.S. Naval Academy Summer Seminar; participating in the Edgefield County Veterans Day Program; Joseph S. Riley Institute at Furman University for Emerging Public Leaders; and NJROTC CO/XO Leadership Academy.

James is the son of Mr. and Mrs. David Beja of Johnston. Both parents teach in the South Carolina school system and are key reasons why James has achieved this high level of distinction.
