Edgefield AmeriCorps Students Receive Training in Disaster Preparedness

web posted March 8, 2010
JOHNSTON – Edgefield County School District AmeriCorps Success By Ten Students went through an intense Disaster Preparedness training on February 20. Ms. Sandy Backensto of the American Red Cross was the trainer for the session. The students learned about the various duties that they would manager when a shelter was open in our county to receive residents.

They participated in a simulated activity where they had to register incoming citizens to a shelter, set up cots for sleeping areas, prepared food and helped to keep order.

The students are now certified by the American Red Cross to be able to assist at a county shelter should a disaster there be a call for the opening of facilities.
