Thurmond Takes 5th in State FFA Dairy Judging Event

web posted March 8, 2012

EDGEFIELD – The State FFA Dairy Judging Career Development Event was held in conjunction with the Spring Dairy Show on Friday March 2 at Garrison Arena in Clemson, SC. Students from all over the state gathered to showcase their skills in selecting quality Dairy Cattle.

The contest tests students knowledge of the Dairy Industry through taking a written exam, completing a sire selection exercise, placing 4 classes of cattle, and defending their placing through oral reasons. This year, students defended their placings on classes of Holstein and Guernsey cattle.

Students from the Strom Thurmond FFA Chapter placed 5th in the event. Team members include: Mills Dorn, Austin Fulmer, Rachel Litke and Ben Rhor. Their Advisors are Dan Henderson & Darla Ste ele. Mills Dorn was also a high individual overall at the contest.

The National FFA Organization, formerly known as the Future Farmers of America, is a national youth organization of 523,309 student members – all preparing for leadership and careers in the science, business and technology of agriculture – as part of 7,487 local FFA chapters in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The National FFA Organization changed to its present name in 1988, in recognition of the growth and diversity of agriculture and agricultural education.

The FFA mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. Visit www.ffa.org for more information and follow us on Facebook, and Twitter and FFA Nation.
