STH Mock Trial Team Places Third in State

web posted March 13, 2013

COUNTY – The Strom Thurmond High School Mock Trial team placed third in the South Carolina state competition March 8-9, 2013 out of fifty teams competing this year. After the regional competition, there were twelve teams remaining. They squared off in Lexington at the Marc Westbrook Courthouse on Friday and Saturday. Each team competed in four rounds in a powermatched tournament.

Strom Thurmond defeated Wando in the first round, lost to North Myrtle Beach (the eventual winner) in the second round, defeated Ft. Dorchester in round three, and defeated the Governor's School for the Maths and Sciences in the final round.

Unfortunately, Ft. Mill barely edged the Thurmond team out for the right to face North Myrtle Beach in the fifth and final round. The teams was pleased with their performance, nevertheless.

Awards for Best Attorney each round went to Jacob Harding and Kaitlyn Pugh. Best Witness awards went to Grace Russ, Jacob Harding, Jackie Polz, and Keyson Whiteside.

Team members are: Kaitlyn Pugh, Jacob Harding, Jackie Polz, Erin Sweeney, John Gillespie, Grace Russ, Keyson Whiteside, Arturo Pineda, Jamarr McCain, Raven Williams, Nia Adams, Clara Mutschler, Samantha Prescott, Brook Caldwell, and Leticia Pena.

The case this year was about bed bugs in hotels. The plaintiff was a well known journalist who got bed bugs while staying at an exclusive South Carolina hotel in 2008. Afterward, the hotel gave an interview in a South Carolina newspaper accusing the plaintiff of planting the bed bugs herself. The journalist filed suit for negligence and defamation. Adding complication to the case was a countersuit for defamation by the defendant against the plaintiff for broadcasting a story that accused the hotel of failing to keep clients safe from bed bugs.

The students gave up two hours every day after school from November to March and every Sunday afternoon in January and February to prepare for this competiton.  But the fine-tuning that gave STHS an extra edge was provided by attorneys Blair Massey and Shane Massey. They are the primary reason STHS has finished in the top three the last three years. Invaluable assistance was also provided by Steven McKinney, Jeffrey Bryan, Gary Crump, Susan O'Neal and Denise Jackson.
