Rebel Robotics Team competes in FIRST Tech Challenge at SC State

web posted March 14, 2009
ORANGEBURG – University on Friday, February 20th.  FIRST Tech Challenge is a mid-level robotics competition that challenges the students’ creative problem-solving skills by enabling them to build robots that do amazing things. Students design and construct robotic devices which can be autonomously programmed or operator-controlled to perform various tasks that expand the boundaries of experimental intelligence.

The 2008/09 FIRST Tech Challenge was called FIRST Face Off.  The team worked as a group to overcome obstacles and meet challenges while learning from and interacting with their peers and mentors. Special thanks is offered to Daniel Legrand, a STHS and Robotics Team alumni, for coming back to help out. The object of the game was to obtain a higher score than your opposing alliance by removing colored pucks from 8 different racks around the field and placing them in various locations in the center scoring area. Teams were also challenged to traverse over rough and rolling terrain.

The theme of the day on Friday was “technical difficulty.” The morning began with SC State’s audio system malfunctioning, so Strum Thurmond’s own Cody Canipe did an outstanding job of singing the national anthem to the crowd. The second bit of technical difficulty was not so easy to overcome. The team’s robot would not respond to the computer program as planned and was instead receiving interference from other control stations. The students worked diligently all day, but were only able to compete at a minimum level. The lessons learned from this year’s competition will be applied to next year’s challenge.

Any parents wishing to help with the robotics’ team should contact Penny Morris at Strom Thurmond High School.

The Rebel Robotics Team would like to thank the Strom Thurmond Career Center and Toyota Tapestry Grant Program for funding this year’s team.
