Coach Smallen leaves STH for job at Coastal Carolina University

web posted Apri 19, 2006

JOHNSTON – Strom Thurmond coach Gary Smallen will be taking a position with Coastal Carolina University in Conway, SC. Though no official announcement has been made from Strom Thurmond or the Athletic Department EdgefieldDaily.com learned of the move last week and tipped our readers on the INsider. However, all doubt was removed when Coach Smallen told listeners to Sports Talk, a syndicated sports talk show, that he has accepted the position.

On the show, broadcast Friday April 14, Coach Smallen confirmed he was assuming the position with Coastal Carolina University Football Program as a co-offensive coordinator.

Calls to Coach Smallen and the Athletic Department at Strom Thurmond have not been returned.

The Edgefield County School Board accepted the retirement of Coach Smallen at their meeting last week, but insisted he was coming back next year and the retirement was just a formality.

Costal Carolina University finished their 2005 season with a 9-2 record and capturing its second consecutive Big South title. The Football Program also had 15 players named to the All-Big South Conference honors for outstanding play. Of course, Coach Smallen is leaving Strom Thurmond just after the school capturing its second State Championship in over 30 years.

What effect the loss will have on the Rebels is not known and no one is talking.
