JOHNSTON – Edgefield County Assistant Superintendent David Mathis has accepted a position with the Aiken County School District. The Aiken County School Board voted Tuesday night to hire Dr. Mathis as an Assistant Superintendent with the Aiken County School District.

Dr. Mathis has been in the Edgefield County School System for his entire twenty-five years in education. “Every working hour of it has been right here,” Dr. Mathis said. The last seven years has been in his position as Assistant Superintendent in the Edgefield County School District Office.

“I didn’t apply,” for the position Dr. Mathis said, “I was not looking to move.” The Aiken County School System contacted him and asked Dr. Mathis to interview. “I am very excited,” about the new position he said.

Edgefield County Superintendent Dr. Sharon Keesley said Dr. Mathis leaving, “is going to be a huge loss for Edgefield County”. Dr. Keesley said the loss will be personal too, “David and I have been good friends for so long, I’m going to miss working so close with him.” The new job is a step up for Dr. Mathis and could lead to bigger positions down the road, “It’s a great career move for him,” Dr. Keesley said.

Dr. Mathis will tender his resignation at Tuesday the Edgefield County School Board's regular scheduled meeting. He will assume the duties of the new job on July 1, 2006. Dr. Mathis said there were no plans to move to assume the position.

Calls to the Aiken County School District Office were not returned at this writing.
