STH Girls Softball advance in play-offs: assault on coach after game mars event, parent says

web posted Apri 25, 2006

JOHNSTON – A 3-2 play-off win by the Strom Thurmond Girls Softball Team over Lakewood was marred by an assault on the winning coach after the game by a Strom Thurmond player's parent.

A parent of a player approached Coach Donald Woolsey after the game and began a verbal confrontation that got physical. According to witness reports, the parent, “slugged (Coach Woolsey) in the side of his face”. One witness, who
did not want to be named said, “His (Woolsey) ear was all swollen. Many parents wrote up witness letters as to what they saw,” for Officers.

The dispute
stemmed over who the pitcher was for the game according to witnesses. Police reports show Coach Woolsey saying the man was complaining about, "giving his daughter more playing time" and that the two had argued prior to the game beginning. Police reports and witnesses say Coach Woolsey was on the ground when the two men were separated by assistant coaches and witnesses.

No arrests were made at the scene. Both men were told to see the Magistrate if either party wanted to seek a warrant; neither were able to be reached today for comment.

The win for the Girl's Softball team advances them in the first invitation into the third round of play-off play since 1993. The team continues their strive for a championship in spite of the recent event. The incident has no affect on the player's position with the team we were told.
