2007 Rebels Boys’ Soccer Turns Corner

web posted May 2, 2007
COUNTY – The Strom Thurmond High School Boys’ Soccer team has reached a couple milestones during the 2007 season. The team won its thirteenth game on the season which included three wins over Region opponents. The Rebels under the fourth year of leadership of Arthur Northrop and Johnny Armstrong are thirteen and eight headed into the playoffs. The 3 -0 victory over Ninety-Six on April 24th ensured the first winning season for both coaches at STHS.

“Every season I have coached the Rebels the boys have raised the bar” explained Northrop. “The first year I coached the boys won two games. The next year they won five, last year they won seven, and this year they have pushed it to thirteen wins.” The Rebels had not posted a Region win under Northrop and Armstrong until this year. “I thought we had a good shot with Swansea when they came in the Region, but to beat Airport was sweet” stated Coach Armstrong.

The Rebels have experienced success with strong play from the bench and contributions from several freshmen. Thirteen members of the team have contributed to the scoring process with goals and assists. Usiel Custodio leads the team with twenty-five goals with the remaining twenty-five goals distributed among six other players. “Usiel is a player; he has gotten the attention of all the coaches in our Region both as a defender and an offensive force” noted Northrop.

The lineup for the Rebels has changed dramatically from the opening of the season. Two starters have sustained season ending injuries and several others are dealing with nagging foot and ankle problems. Cesar Navarro who was leading the team in goals when he was injured and Doug Carroll who anchored the defense will not play in the playoffs due to knee surgeries. The Rebel coaching staff has had to pull some younger players off the bench and play other starters in different positions to fill the gaps. “I really miss Doug being on the field” said Parker Northrop, “I’ve had to play his position of sweeper some and I understand just how good he is now.”

Freshmen Ryan Burns and Derek Vaughn are starters and Zack Moore contributes as a substitute on a regular basis. Seniors Brian Lanham, John Cannavan and Briggs Dorn anchor the midfield and defense with Brian Bottoms as Keeper. Ren Fell, Usiel Custodio, Michael Hays, Cody Canipe contribute as Sophomores and Graham Holson, CC Watson, and Parker Northrop are Junior defenders. Substitutes are Samuel Northrop, Dalton Lalonde, Drew Turner, and backup keepers are Dustin Lalonde and Clint Holmes.

The Rebels overcame a significant hurdle for the last part of the season. The Rebels found a way to beat teams a second time. “I knew we could do it because we had three big things going for us” boasted Northrop, “The guys like each other, they play as a team, and they don’t give up!” The Rebels are headed to the Lower State Playoffs and will face Daniel High School on May 1st.
