Strom Thurmond football stand-out faces
felony charges arrested for threats to deputies, dispatchers and false reports to 9-1-1 Edgefielddaily.com web posted August 9, 2005 Strom Thurmond High School Senior and football defensive end stand-out, Kevin Antonio Jones, 18, was arrested on August 5, 2005 and booked on charges of making false reports and threatening the life of public officials. The charges stem from many 9-1-1 calls with false reports and threats according to reports. Mr. Jones is said to have threatened the life of at least two Edgefield County Sheriff Deputies by name, sources said. Investigators said there were many such calls placed by Mr. Jones but would not place a number on how many, "it seemed like it was a hundred," one said on how often the calls were coming in. The Sheriff’s Department traced the cell phone number and that led them to Mr. Jones. Mr. Jones came to the Law Enforcement Center accompanied by his Pastor and apologized for his actions as the investigation continued. In spite of the apology charges were sought and a warrant was issued for his arrest. The charges were leveled as a felony and, if convicted, Mr. Jones “must be fined not more than ten thousand dollars or imprisoned not more than ten years, or both” according to the SC Code of Laws. The subject matter of the calls were not made available . Mr. Jones, an All Region defensive end for the Strom Thurmond football team, could be removed from playing for the Rebels. Edgefield Daily.com spoke to Assistant Superintendent David Mathis who said he was unaware of the arrest. He was not sure if Superintendent Sharon Keesley was informed or not, "because of the busy first day of school and we have not spoken much today," he said. Strom Thurmond Principle Greg Thompson confirmed the school was aware of the charges but did not return our call for comment. Return to Main Page
