Felony charges won’t stop drive for state
championship for STH Edgefielddaily.com web posted August 22, 2005 As
Edgefield
Daily.com reported on the August 5, 2005 arrest of Strom
Thurmond High School football stand-out Kevin
Jones for two felony
charges resulting from threats made to two Edgefield County Sheriff’s
Deputies. The comments by STH Principle Greg Thompson were Jones
would be suspended from play in any
sports; something went awry.As it turns out Kevin Jones was not suspended from play and he has been given a starting position on the 2005-2006 varsity team. The felony charges against Mr. Jones, 18, stem from what is described by dispatchers and deputies as “countless” calls and threats by Mr. Jones to various E-911 operators and Edgefield County Sheriff Department personnel. Mr. Jones, accompanied by his Pastor, reportedly came to the Law Enforcement Center and apologized for the calls according to sources. Days later Jones was arrested and charged with two felony counts of threatening the life of a public official. Those charges have been passed on by the Edgefield County Magistrates Office to General Sessions Court due to the severity of the charges. General Sessions Court will convene again in October of 2005. According to the SC Code of Laws the charges carry a maximum of ten years for each count. Counting on the word of Strom Thurmond High School Principle Greg Thompson Edgefield Daily.com assumed Jones would be off the football team. Then, on Thursday, August 18, the Augusta Chronicle ran a story featuring none other than All Region award winner Kevin Jones starting for the Rebels at defensive end. Not only is Jones not off the team, he has not missed practice. Coach Sawyer told the Augusta Chronicle: "We've got some great players," Sawyer said. "Great players who do amazing things. But I don't know if I would trade any one of them for that Kevin Jones." Evidently not even felony charges are enough for the coaching staff to remove, much less bench, Kevin Jones from the roster. Calls to the STH Principle and Athletic Department for comment were not answred Friday for this update. We will try again Monday.
