STHS Robotics Team kicksoff year with visit from "Making Magic" guests

web posted September 22, 2006

WEBNEWS – The Strom Thurmond High School Robotics Team held their kick-off meeting last week in the school cafeteria. The students and parents were joined by the Aiken County Robotics Team, better know in their county as “Makin’ Magic”. A special quest with the Aiken Team was their robot that the team has used in competition and to make guest appearances at events throughout their county.

The local team had the opportunity to study the construction of the Aiken team’s robot as well as drive the robot. The students from both schools were able to discuss building and maneuvering techniques to help with the construction of their robot for this school year.

This will be the second year that the local STHS team will compete in the FIRST Vex Competition to be held in February at South Carolina State.  This year’s challenge was relaxed at 12:00 p.m. on February 13 from the FIRST Vex Competition headquarters. Students will build a robot approximately 18 cubic inches that will life softballs and place them in goals and maneuver over a designed obstacle course. During the building time of the robot, the students work as a group to overcome obstacles and meet the challenges of designing a working robot while learning from and interacting with their peers and adult mentors.

“This is what it is all about. Watching young men and women become excited about school, and particularly in the areas of science and technology is a plus,” said Lee Williams, who is an advisor for the group along with Penny Morris.

“The students are very excited about the potential of building the larger robot, but it will take a lot of community support to make that happen,” said Ms. Morris and continued, “the budget for this competition can run in excess of $5,000,” she stated.

The team is currently accepting patron donations. If you are interested in making a contribution, please contact Penny Morris or Lee Williams at the high school.
