Strom Thurmond Career Center FFA Receives Emblem in
Environmental/Natural Resources Award
web
posted October 30, 2008
JOHNSTON – The Strom Thurmond Career
Center FFA Envirothon Team won a silver emblem of award at the 81st
National FFA Convention held October 20-24 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
The National FFA Organization awarded the medal to the local Strom
Thurmond Career Center Team representing the State FFA Association
Environmental/Natural Resources Team. As sponsors, Smithfield Foods and
USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service provided funds for plaques,
medals and scholarships for winning teams and high scoring individuals.
Members of the team include: Sam Adkinson, Zach
Rearden, Sam Northrop and Dustin Lalonde. Zach Rearden’s impressive
score of 547.50 won him a gold medal as the 12th top individual scorer
in the nation and a $500.00 scholarship. Team members Adkinson,
Northrop and Lalonde were all silver medal award winners.
The team was accompanied by their advisor, Mr. Hugh
Bland and his wife Lisa. Dr. Mary R. Crenshaw, Superintendent of
Edgefield County Schools joined the students as a special guest of the
local Strom Thurmond Career Center FFA Chapter on Thursday for the
awards presentation
“I was deeply honored to be asked by our local FFA
Chapter to be their guest at this convention and to attend the awards
ceremony with our local students. The students made me extremely proud
of our FFA chapter and our students were outstanding representatives
for their local chapter as well as the state of South Carolina,” said
Dr. Mary Crenshaw.
The National FFA
Environmental/Natural Resources CDE tests students’ abilities in actual
environmental analysis, soil testing, water analysis as well as
addressing global issues. Each of the 40 teams competed against teams
from across the nation. Members work cooperatively to address an
environmental/natural resource scenario, including the identification
of possible solutions to a given problem. A written exam is also
completed.
The National FFA Organization, formerly known as the
Future Farmers of America, is a national youth organization of 507,763
student members – all preparing for leadership and careers in the
science, business and technology of agriculture – as part of 7,439
local FFA chapters in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin
Islands. The National FFA Organization changed to its present name in
1988, in recognition of the growth and diversity of agriculture and
agricultural education. The FFA mission is to make a positive
difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for
premier leadership, personal growth and career success through
agricultural education.
