Students Re-Enact the Constitutional Convention
web
posted October 31, 2008
JOHNSTON – Strom
Thurmond students in
Ms. Denise Jackson's history classes held a simulation of the Constitutional
Convention project this past week. Each student was assigned a role of
character of the delegates from the Constitutional Convention of
1787.
The Virginia Plan was introduced and debated by the students followed
by the presenting of the Connecticut Compromise and debates. A lengthy
debate was held on how the federal government would raise money, and
great fearful discussions of the executive power and method of the
selection of a President as well as the provision to attach a Bill of
Rights were heard.
(Pictured above - left to right) are the delegates representing South
Carolina: Nolan
Seigler-John Rutledge; Felicia Jones-Charles Pinckney; Kathlyn
Durham-Pierce Butler and Malcolm Cook representing Hugh Williams of
North Carolina.
Placing the timeline in order, the students voice that it was late
September and they were tired, homesick and wanted to come to a vote on
the Constitution. The Constitution was accepted by the Simulated
Convention and the final remark of “All Is Good” was registered by the
modern day delegates over the process of establishing the nations
Constitution.
