FFA Teams Represent State Of South Carolina in Nationals

COUNTY - The ST Career Center Forestry Team and Agronomy Team represented their school, Edgefield County and the state of South Carolina at the 79th National FFA Convention held in Indianapolis, Indiana October 25-28. Advisors for the two teams are Hugh Bland and Dan Henderson, Instructors at STCC.

Members of the Forestry Team were one of 40 teams participating in the 2006 National FFA Forestry Career Development Event (CDE). Local team member Josh McIlvried placed 18th in the nation and received a gold medal award with a $500.00 scholarship. Team members Ashley Miller and Jonathan Holmes received silver medals and Brittany Bearden received a bronze medal.  The team as a unit was awarded a silver medal and placed 25th in the nation.
   
Participants in the event were asked to answer questions on tree and equipment identification took a general knowledge exam and completed interactive forestry applications. The National FFA Forestry CDE is co-sponsored by Husqvarna as a special project of the National FFA Foundation.
  
The local Career Center Agronomy Team ranked 22nd in the nation and received as a team a silver medal. They were one of 32 teams participating in the 2006 National Agronomy Career Development Event (CDE). John Northrop received a gold award, Kyle Harper a silver award, and Jessica Gibson and Graham Holson each received bronze awards.

Participants in the agronomy event were asked to compete in all facets of the agronomic industry, from crop and weed identification to integrated pest management. Soil analysis and managerial decision making skills were also tested. The national FA Agronomy CDE is sponsored by Bayer CropSciene as a special project of the National FFA Foundation.
   
Both Husqvarna and Bayer CropScience are two of 23 different national events that use the fun of competition to connect classroom learning and careers.
   
FFA is a national youth organization of 495,046 student members preparing for leadership and careers in the science, bossiness and technology of agriculture with 7,242 local chapters in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. FFA strives to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.
