Police
report released in Broadwater arrest
web posted November 10, 2005 JOHNSTON – Three students have been suspended from Strom Thurmond High School with recommendation for expulsion stemming from the arrest of Rebel receiver Justin Broadwater, 18, on Monday. According to the just released Incident Report from the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office two other students where also charged with being minors in possession of alcohol. According to the report Mr. Broadwater rode to school with a 17 year old student and both were drinking what was described as “homemade” alcohol mixed with “Sunny D” drinks. Mr. Broadwater’s condition seemed to worsen over time and had to be helped into the back of Deputy Al Moore’s patrol car to be taken to the Law Enforcement Center for a breathalyzer test. Shortly thereafter he was transported to the Edgefield County Hospital to be checked for alcohol poisoning for safety reasons. As the investigation into the incident continued School Resource Officer Sonny Reel located the 17 year old accomplice and informed him a search of his car was to take place. On the floorboard of the driver’s side a Sunny D bottle containing alcohol was found and the driver stated it was not his because he had thrown his bottle out before reaching the end of Woodyard Road. A search of that area did not result in any bottles found. Reviewing video footage Mr. Broadwater and the 17 year old were spotted walking around the commons area with two bottles. A search of the trash cans in the area turned up the bottles the two were seen with in the video and they contained what smelled strongly of alcohol. On Tuesday, as the investigation continued, the third student, a 15 year old, admitted to selling Mr. Broadwater two bottles of alcohol for $15 after the football game on Friday night. The description of the bottles matched those found on Monday in the car and trashcan. All three were suspended in the matter with recommendation for expulsion. Mr. Broadwater was charged as an adult and the 17 year old was given a summons for a minor in possession of alcohol. The 15 year old was to be petitioned to the Department of Juvenile Justice on the same charge. The names of the 17 and 15 year old were not released due to their age. For
