NJROTC Thanksgiving Food Drive a Success
web
posted November 28, 2007
JOHNSTON – Since November 1st, the cadets
have been collecting food for Thanksgiving from students, faculty,
janitors, administrators and parents. The National Wild Turkey
Federation donated 40 turkeys through the Turkey Hunter’s Care Program
to Strom Thurmond’s NJROTC Unit. This year the cadets, boosters and
instructors delivered food to 46 families in Edgefield County. This was
the largest food drive in the past seven years, surpassing last years’
delivery to 36 families.
The NJROTC Program develops and educates the cadets to be informed and
responsible citizens. At 3:30 PM on November 19, 2007, two instructors,
six NJROTC Booster parents, the Mayor of Johnson and 21 cadets set out
to deliver food to 46 families in Edgefield County. Every year the
cadets bring tears of joy to those families in need for Thanksgiving.
For three hours the cadets displayed a value of citizenship and a sense
of accomplishment.
Sometimes the NJROTC Unit is over shadowed by others due to their
successful accomplishments. Hopefully the community will recognize what
the cadets (14 to 18 years old) have accomplished, their willingness to
sacrifice and the determination to give to those in need. The Senior
Naval Science Instructor, Chief Warrant Officer McClendon and Naval
Science Instructor Petty Officer Face are very proud with the cadets,
NJROTC Booster Club, Mayor Campbell, students, faculty, janitors,
administrators, and parents that assisted us in the collection and
delivery of the food to those families in need, “thank you for giving”.
A special thanks goes out to the National Wild Turkey Federation for
donating 40 turkeys.
